The Colombo Blockchain Meetup, one of the most awaited meetup for Blockchain enthusiasts across Sri Lanka. The third edition of the Colombo Blockchain Meetup happened on the 24th of February 2020 at the 99X Technology auditorium. The session was conducted by Dileepa Jayathilake, the manager of Research and Development at 99X Technology and a Co Founder at Tracified and Sharmilan Somasundaram, a Senior Software Engineer 99X Technology.
Out of the past few Colombo Blockchain Meetups, this session was able to stand out from the rest. And here is why!
CryptoKitties worth Millions
The session was initiated by Sharmilan Somasundaram sharing his view on the “Potential of Non-Fungible Tokens(NFT) in Blockchain”. As per a the generic definition NFT, it is a special type of cryptographic token which represents something unique thus not mutually interchangeable by their individual specification. If you are further interested there are numerous online resources that you could read on to learn further.
However what took the attention of the audience was the practical applications of NFTs that are already there in the market.
CryptoKitties
CryptoKitties is a blockchain game on Ethereum where the virtual cats can be purchased, breed and sell. Based on the mutations and the crossover taking place the value of the cats are ranging from a few couple of dollars to a hundreds and thousands of dollars.
For instance the following Crypto Kitty named Dragon was sold for approximately $170,000, or the equivalent of 600 ETH in cryptocurrency.
Decentraland
Decentraland is a virtual world where users can create their own avatars and build their own virtual space. The speciality of this virtual world is it is based on Blockchain transactions and what makes things interesting is that it also allows to have the those above mentioned expensive kitties to be used in it.
Sharmilan also shared further on other applications mainly in the entertainment industry where NFTs are potentially used.
World’s first Blockchain Explorer for Supply Chains
As the second speaker for the day, Dileepa Jayathilake made an introductory note on the evolution of Blockchain and how a need for Blockchain explorer has arisen among the Blockchain community.
During the session Dileepa demonstrated several Blockchain explorers such as the Blockchain.com Explorer, Ether Scan, etc. However as per Dileepa, though there are numerous Blockchain explorers optimized for various domains there is no Blockchain explorer dedicated for supply chains.
With that note, Dileepa introduced the audience to the whole new Blockchain Explorer which the Tracified team has been working on “The Tillit Explorer” which is dedicated for supply chains. He also demonstrated the Tillit Explorer with actual public keys generated from their client “Saaraketha Organics” which is one of Sri Lanka’s leading organic food suppliers.
During the presentation Dileepa also emphasized that,
The “Tillit Explorer” is the First ever Blockchain Explorer for supply chains.
Finally, along with the Q&A session the third Colombo Blockchain Meetup came to an end.
It is truly inspiring how Blockchain is being introduced to various domains everyday and for sure as Fred Ehrsam said “Everything will be tokenized and connected by a Blockchain one day.” and if you want to keep up with the pace, keep in touch with the Colombo Blockchain Meetup group.
Let’s keep in touch. Have a fantastic day.
